Michigan Common Core Standards were adopted June 15, 2010 by the Michigan State Board of Education with full implementation in the 2012-13 school year.

Michigan is a member of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium. In 2016 the Michigan State Board of Education began testing using the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP).
