Georgia Common Core State Standards were formally adopted in June 2010, with full implementation in the 2014-2015 school year. In June of 2013 the state officially withdrew from the national program. In 2015 the standards were renamed Georgia Standards of Excellence, incorporating some of the Common Core Standards.

Georgia implemented a nationally benchmarked set of performance standards. The Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) effectively encompass the GPS, including an extension and focus relevant to the developing global marketplace and twenty-first century skills.

Georgia officially joined and is currently a governing state in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).
